Helping to empower leaders and learners to connect with the unique and evolving potential of who they are, where they are and what they could be

Jonathan began his career as a primary teacher in the early 90’s and then after wanting to play more of a part in shaping the learning experiences of the whole school he moved into a range of leadership roles. He believed that the ‘transmission of knowledge’ model of education was woefully outdated for the 21st century learner and so became the lead learner of a Hampshire School in September 2002. It has always been Jonathan’s view that his role was to ensure all members of the school community become the best learners and thinkers they can be. He felt he could do this better by leading the learning rather than ‘heading up’ the teaching. He has also been the acting headteacher at two Primary Schools. This experience coupled with regular work in primary and secondary schools keeps his courses and school improvement work firmly rooted in the real world of education.

Over the last few years he has been working with a range of schools and clusters, delivering INSET days and working with leadership teams on creating a learning-centred culture. He has been developing P4C (Philosophy for Children) since 2005 and is an accredited level 1 P4C trainer with SAPERE, having working with many other schools to develop high quality practice to develop children’s thinking skills. He has presented workshops on P4C at local and national conferences and seminars. In addition his last school was the second school in the UK to achieve the prestigious SAPERE Gold P4C Award. Jonathan is also an experienced coach and coaches staff and headteachers from a variety of different schools. He has practical experience of establishing and leading a successful coaching culture within a school over a number of years. He has worked with a number of schools and colleges to embed coaching as a powerful tool for personal growth and development both with children and staff. Jonathan has been a School Improvement Partner for 3 schools in the East of Hampshire and has worked as a headteacher facilitator on ‘Future Changemakers’ – a project to develop school leaders of the future. He supports a range of schools with school improvement work and leadership development. He was also a facilitator for the NCSL Middle Leaders Development Programme and now works with the National College and University of Winchester to deliver NPQH, NPQSL and NPQML leadership programmes.

Jonathan believes that schools need to re-evaluate their role in the light of rapid social, technological, economic and environmental change to ensure they do the things that Google can’t. In particular helping children and adults develop the key skills of being a skilled learner through the nine elements of learning, developing deep critical, creative, collaborative and caring thinkers through P4C and finally using coaching to dismantle barriers and fulfil well thought out goals and ambitions. Jonathan fully understands the demands that are placed on school leaders and his school improvement and leadership work helps leaders at all levels balance a range of demands, whilst keeping learning and thinking at the core of what they do

In his spare time Jonathan enjoys cycling, home cinema, an eclectic range of sometimes dubious music tastes and finally keeping and breeding chameleons. He is married with 3 children.
